With the high-quality construction of numerous portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as attaching your yard hose. But while a portable system may eventually be your best option, there are reasons you may want to think about an in-ground or wall-mount system prior to you decide.

In-Ground Systems
In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground-- either through a bolt mounting kit or straight into the ground-- and are normally more stiff and take up less area than portables. In-ground systems frequently require that you hire an expert to complete the job, however when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take penalizing dunks with ease.

Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, consist of removable post functions that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and function durable break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several kinds to pick from. Some include a counter-balance spring that lets you perform simple, one-hand changes while others may include a strong, pneumatic system.

Wall-Mount Systems
Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a home, a tall keeping wall, or a garage. Typically tougher than portables, wall-mounts have the added benefit of enhancing your existing ground area for the court, because you won't take any area up with the base or pole. Not all systems consist of the essential hardware, so make sure you include a mounting kit to your list.

Portable Systems
Portable systems require very little installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems normally include a base that can be fulled of sand or water to stabilize them and consist of wheels for mobility. Although they are not as tough as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to establish and can frequently be folded for practical storage.

Backboard Considerations
No matter which system you choose, you'll want to review Backboards 101. Many domestic systems include backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic provides the expert look and feel of glass, it is not as stiff as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are practically vandal resistant, however don't offer the true rebounding action.

The policy size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Many portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards supply more bank shot chances, they are normally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board.

Competitive Edge was a delight to deal with, but the product arrived missing hardware and with defective poles. The instruction book does not label the main pieces- only hardware, until the step dealing with that particular piece. So if you want to take inventory before assembly, it is very difficult. This definitely requires 2 people and is not for a beginner builder. I recommend using with an in-ground sleeve for stability for a number of reasons, including stability. The product appears to be of decent quality.

I recently purchased the Lifetime 71799 and installed it according to the directions. Did not use a ground sleeve, but did put into a 22"x18" square with tons of concrete. The base is very sturdy, however, the rest of the pole and backboard seem to be top heavy! There is a lot of play and bounce when a ball hits the backboard. I realize I did not buy the top-of-the-line system, but I did expect it to be sturdy. We will see how it holds up during heavy use (by my 9 year old son) and through the winter. As for the folks at Competitive Edge Products, they were great with helping me get the best deal on this goal. The item was shipped and arrived faster than expected!
